A group of sailors led by Joseph Whidbey, part of the Vancouver Expedition, found and mapped Deception Pass on June 7, 1792. George Vancouver gave it the name “Deception” because it had misled him into thinking Whidbey Island was a peninsula. Vancouver sent Joseph Whidbey to explore inlets leading to the east.

Can you walk across Deception Pass Bridge?
You can walk across the bridge. There are sidewalks on either side. The best places to park to walk the bridge are a parking lot at the south end of the bridge, a small lot in the middle at canoe pass bridge (northbound traffic only) and some pull-out spots just north of the bridge (southbound traffic only).
